Best Free PDF Tools Online (2026): Merge, Split, Compress & More
UPDATED SEPTEMBER 2026 · 5 MIN READ
Working with PDFs used to mean expensive software or questionable online converters that upload your files to who-knows-where. Not anymore.
We built a full suite of browser-based PDF tools that run entirely on your device. Nothing gets uploaded. Here's what's available and how to use each one.
Merge PDFs
Need to combine multiple PDFs into one file? Our Merge PDF tool lets you upload several files, drag them into the right order, and download a single combined PDF. Common use cases:
- Combining scanned document pages into one file
- Merging separate chapters of a report
- Assembling a multi-part invoice
The merge uses pdf-lib under the hood, so pages are copied exactly as they appear — no quality loss.
Split PDFs
The opposite problem: you have a large PDF and only need a few pages. The Split PDF tool shows you thumbnails of every page. Click the ones you want, hit extract, and you get a new PDF with just those pages.
This is especially handy for extracting specific pages from contracts, research papers, or presentations.
Compress PDFs
Large PDFs are annoying to email and slow to load. The Compress PDF tool strips metadata and optimizes the internal structure of your PDF. It won't re-encode images (so quality stays the same), but it can shave off meaningful file size — especially on PDFs with lots of embedded metadata.
Add Watermarks
Protect your documents or mark them as drafts with the PDF Watermark tool. Enter your text, pick a font size, color, opacity, and rotation angle. The watermark gets overlaid on every page.
Useful for:
- Marking documents as "DRAFT" or "CONFIDENTIAL"
- Adding copyright notices to PDFs before sharing
- Branding client-facing documents
Rotate Pages
Scanned PDFs often come in with the wrong orientation. The Rotate PDF tool rotates all pages by 90°, 180°, or 270° in one click.
Reorder, Copy, and Delete Pages
The Reorder Pages tool gives you a thumbnail view of every page with drag-and-drop reordering. You can also duplicate pages (copy icon) or delete them (trash icon). It's the most visual way to reorganize a PDF.
PDF to Images
Need to extract pages as images? The PDF to Image tool renders each page as a high-resolution PNG at 2× scale and bundles them into a ZIP file. Great for:
- Sharing individual pages on social media
- Using PDF pages in presentations
- Archiving specific pages as images
Images to PDF
The reverse: the Image to Image tool takes PNG, JPEG, or WebP files and combines them into a single PDF. Each image becomes one page, scaled to fit a standard letter-sized sheet. Upload multiple images and reorder them before downloading.
View PDFs
Sometimes you just need to quickly look at a PDF without downloading it. The PDF Viewer renders pages on-screen with zoom controls and keyboard navigation. Handy for a quick preview.
Why Browser-Based?
Every tool on this page runs locally in your browser using JavaScript libraries (pdf-lib and PDF.js). Your files are never sent to a server. This means:
- Privacy: Sensitive documents stay on your device
- Speed: No upload/download wait times
- Reliability: Works offline once the page loads
- No limits: Process as many files as you want
When to Use Desktop Software
Browser tools handle 90% of common PDF tasks. For advanced features like:
- Creating PDFs from scratch with complex layouts
- OCR on scanned documents
- Digital signatures with certificate validation
- Advanced form filling
You'll still want dedicated software like Adobe Acrobat or LibreOffice Draw. But for quick merges, splits, and conversions, browser tools are faster and simpler.
